Major Research Interests

Our group is interested in the microbial interactions of aquatic ecosystems. Work in the lab and field studies focuses on the role of microorganisms in biogeochemical cycles in marine and freshwater systems, and conversely how the biogeochemistry of aquatic systems affects the production and activities of microorganisms.

Currently our group is focusing on several areas of research: the role of viruses in biogeochemical cycles, the influence of nutrient bioavailability on microbial proliferation, the development of molecular diagnostics for harmful algal bloom events, and the application of genomic and proteomic tools to understanding viral and prokaryotic diversity and activity.

Our research in microbial ecology involves the use of molecular, biochemical, and physiological tools in both lab and field studies. The long term objectives are to understand the microbial component of freshwater and marine food webs, to develop a better understanding of how trace metals cycle in aquatic systems, and to elucidate the direct effects of viruses on planktonic members of the aquatic communities.
