JOINT FESIN/ NORDFORSK RESEARCH NETWORK WORKSHOP
METAGENOMIC DATA ANALYSIS
Edinburgh, Scotland
Friday, July 30 through Sunday, August 1st, 2010
Workshop Description:
The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to available methodologies for analyzing large genomic and metagenomic datasets. The workshop consists of two days of intensive seminars and hands-on tutorials. We will dedicate the third day for discussions, brief talks and working groups to address important issues in metagenomics and how to improve resources available for fungal research. The primary objectives are 1. To provide participants with training in bioinformatics resources available for analysis of high throughput genomic and metagenomic datasets; 2. In discussion panels and working groups, to identify infrastructure needs for fungal metagenomics research and establish priorities for multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional proposals.

Morning
Overview on Fungal genomes 30-45 mins
Jason Stajich jason.stajich@ucr.edu
Ribosomal Database Project (emphasis on 454 pipeline and other resources that could be used in fungal metagenomics research).
Ari Jumponen
Chytrid Metatranscriptomics
Terri Porter and Rytas Vilgalys, Duke University
Other talks to be scheduled
Afternoon
Potential working groups
1. Fungal Genomes - priorities
2. Titanium 454: collaborations
3. How could a centralized reliable infrastructure for fungal metagenomics be constructed? Database of curated fungal sequences?
Labeling of Environmental Sequences
Other issues
4. How can fungal data be made more useful to the community at large. Is depositing sequences in GenBank/NCBI sufficient? Some of the issues that we may consider would be SRA (Short Read Archive) and how to harvest data from there for meta-analyses, what are the metadata that we should request to be included, what is the best strategy for sequence accession (submit all or examples of unisequences).
Lodging
The Edinburgh Convention Bureau has set aside additional nights at IMC9 lodgings to accommodate FESIN-NRW workshop participants, so you will only need to book one hotel or dormitory for both events through the IMC9 website (http://www.imc9.info/). The Pollock Hall Campus of the University of Edinburgh can be reached easily by bus from all the offered accommodations except Heriot-Watt University, which is outside the city of Edinburgh and has limited bus service. If your desired hotel/dormitory is not listed, e-mail for assistance in booking your lodgings or extending reservations (bookings@conventionedinburgh.com). Eileen Smith, Conference Accommodation Co-cordinator for the ECB, can assist you if you need further assistance (tel.: +44 (0)131 473 3874 fax: +44 (0)131 473 3878).
Number of participants: Because of facility limitations, registration is limited to 60 participants (30 from North America, 30 from Europe). At the present time, we are limiting participation to 2 individuals from a single lab but you may “share” a registration (i.e., one person attends on day 1 and a second “buddy” attends on day 2). We expect participation to be approximately equally divided between European and North American participants.
Application for workshop attendance: Click here to download the FESIN application for attendance/funging.
European participants not working in US labs should apply through the Nordforsk Research Network.
