Undergraduate Research Participation
Most students interested in original scientific investigation do so by signing up for course credit under BCMB452. Occasionally, a lab may hire a student into a paid position - watch out for ads posted on noticeboards, if you are interested. Before signing up for BCMB452 you need to obtain permission from a BCMB professor (principal investigator). If you are serious about getting your feet wet with experimental work, you should identify a number of labs whose research appeals to you. Make an appointment with the PI to introduce yourself. How much time per week can you invest over the course of the semester? Bring a transcript of your coursework and be prepared to discuss the particular research area and any prior experience you may have. Keep in mind that your motivation and talent to learn new skills are generally more important for a successful lab experience than prior preparation.
Notes: The maximum number of BCMB452 credits that count toward the Major is about to be restricted from 12 to 6. Note that the number of credits does not equal the number of contact hours; expectations must be discussed with the professor. Students are encouraged to start research early in their program; the corequisites still mentioned in the catalog may be waived.
Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program
The goal of the McNair Program is to increase graduate degree attainment of students from underrepresented segments of society through involvement in scientific research. CLICK HERE for more information about this program.
