Frequently Asked Questions

What is the application deadline for Fall admission?

February 1

Do I have to complete 2 applications: one for the department and one for the University?

Yes, both applications MUST be completed and submitted (one to the department and one to the University) for consideration by the Graduate Admission Committee. The Graduate Admission Committee cannot consider applications that have not also been submitted to the University. Both forms are available on the BCMB department webpage.

Can I send my applications to the department and the University in the same envelope and let you transfer these documents?

We do not recommend this, as both offices are not located in the same building, and we communicate most information electronically. If you choose to send everything in one envelope, we cannot guarantee that the documents will be transferred to the appropriate office or that any transfer will be made on time. To avoid delays and ensure receipt of your application in a timely manner, we strongly advise you to send applications to each office in separate envelopes and before the deadline of February 1.

How are the applications reviewed?

A graduate admission committee, comprised of at least 5 faculty members, reviews all applications (domestic and international) and ranks applicants on a competitive basis. Please note that decisions are made by the committee and that the chair of the graduate admission committee does not make decisions on applications.

How many applications do you receive each year? How many positions are offered?

On average, we receive about 150 applications and 8-10 graduate students are accepted per year (most competitive applicants regardless of whether they are domestic or international applicants).

Are scholarships or financial aid available?

All accepted students receive financial support, either in the form of a GTA (Graduate Teaching Assistantship) or a GRA (Graduate Research Assistantship). The department provides tuition and health insurance. Students are responsible for fees (usually about $200).

What are the minimum GRE scores for admission?

The department does not have minimum score requirement. To be competitive, applications with higher GRE scores are better. Please note that the GRE scores are not the only criteria considered for admissions: prior experience, GPA, academic preparation, etc. are also very important aspects of an application.

Is the GRE subject test required?

No, the department does not require it. However, general GRE test scores must be included in your application. For your application to be given full consideration by the admission committee, the GRE scores should be received by the application deadline.

International applicants: What are the minimum TOEFL/ iBT (internet-based) scores? What are the minimum IELTS scores?

A minimum score of 550 for paper-based test, 213 for computer based test or 80 for internet-based (iBT) test with a minimum of 20 in each sub-section are required for consideration of applications. A minimum score of 6.5 for the IELTS is required for consideration.

The official scores must be received directly for the Educational Testing Service for consideration of applications.

All applicants: Where can I download the forms for the application to the graduate school?

Downloadable forms for graduate admissions  can be obtained at http://graduateadmissions.utk.edu/forms.shtml

International applicants: What are the documents and information required specifically for international applicants?

The graduate admissions for international student website has a guide that can be consulted for further information at http://graduateadmissions.utk.edu/int-adm-guide.shtml

What are the GRE/TOEFL codes that I should use?

For purposes of reporting GRE and TOEFL scores, the institutional code for the University of Tennessee is 1843.  A departmental code is NOT required.

Can the department cover my application fee?

No, the department cannot cover this fee, regardless of the circumstances.
